Everyone's a Critic: Being a Journalist in an Online Age
Mary Anne Butler (news editor, Bleeding Cool; EiC, Aggressive Comix), Dana Han-Klein (Mohawk Movie Review), Alexandra August (CBR, ScreenRant), and Thomas Parham (APU) discuss the expansion of journalism over the past decade, from the rise of citizen journalism to blogging to vloggers, podcasters, and online-only news sources. The session will be an interactive conversation with the audience about the role new media plays between their readers and the industries and communities they serve, varying levels of informality versus classic ideas of professionalism, show-specific outlets versus general news sites, moving from hobbyist to being a professional, legal challenges, and more.

From Batgirl and Doom Patrol to Watchmen and Y: The Last Man, an ever-expanding number of comic-based TV shows have graced our screens, but how do you translate one visual format to another? Alex Freedman and Nick Watson (Paper Team) bring an all-star group of writers and producers to discuss comics and TV. Panelists include Tamara Becher (Doom Patrol, Daredevil), Marc Bernardin (Castle Rock, Treadstone), Julie and Shawna Benson (Batgirl and the Birds of Prey, The 100), Christopher Monfette (Hellraiser, 12 Monkeys), J. Holtham (Cloak & Dagger, Pitch), and Samantha Levenshus (Nightflyers, Neon Future).

Moderator Spiro Skentzos (Arrow) and several genre showrunners, executive producers, and TV executives including Mark Kruger (Midnight Texas), Rockne S. O’Bannon (Farscape), Gabrielle Stanton (Titans), and Ryan Mickels (manager of current programming, Universal Content Productions) discuss navigating the TV spec terrain, including beginner's mistakes, what producers look for in a writer, and what it takes for you to write a killer spec that will stand above the crowd. There will be a huge Q&A component, so bring your questions.
