Under the current presidential administration, Americans are experiencing an unprecedented erosion of their civil liberties and political institutions. This is especially true for the already marginalized LGBTQ+ community, from Trump's public attacks on transgender military personnel to the rise in hate crimes towards LGBTQ+ persons. In light of these socio-political dangers, queer comic creators have a responsibility to use their platforms to combat these injustices. Prism Comics, moderator Mike Ciriaco (Stonewall Prep, WeHoTV News), and panelists Marc Andreyko (Batwoman, Love Is Love), Vita Ayala (Batgirl, Livewire), Tara Madison Avery (Crush, Butch Lesbians of the '20s, '30s and '40s, Resistance), Elizabeth Beier (The Big Book of Bisexual Errors), and Rex Ogle (Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy) will explore the comic book medium's role in LGBTQ+ advocacy and how comics can educate, combat discrimination, and inspire others to action. At the end of the panel, Elizabeth Beier, Prism Comics Queer Press Grant chairperson, will announce the recipient of the 2019 Prism Comics Queer Press Grant-one of the comics industry's only yearly financial grants supporting aspiring comics creators in publishing new works.
