Comics Arts Conference Session #1: Making Comics in the Classroom: Multiple Literacy learning
The value of integrating comics in the classroom at all levels and in various subjects is now well-established and documented; a useful approach in comics-specific teaching is the making of comics themselves. Like film production, many of the facets of comics creation are intentionally invisible to the reader and challenging to get students to see-and even more challenging to get them to theorize. This panel of educators seeks to encourage teachers at all levels to enter this critical, theoretical space with their students by engaging the form itself, to help them better understand the language of the medium and to be stronger critical thinkers overall. Christina Angel (Metropolitan State University of Denver) and Hannah Means-Shannon (Comicon.com) will explore practical ways to make comics in the classroom. Susan Kirtley (Portland State University) moderates.

Scott Shaw!'s Oddball Comics Live
Cartoonist Scott Shaw! (Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew!, Sonic The Hedgehog, Simpsons Comics) once again presents his uniquely hilarious slideshow of "the craziest comic books ever published!" Once you've seen this mind-roasting presentation, which has played to standing-room-only crowds in San Diego for the better part of four decades, you'll never forget such covers like those with someone getting slapped with a "fish-in-the-face," and those Silver Age issues of Batman and Detective Comics with "Robin-in-the-corner!" Scott's hilarious presentation is for everyone who's enjoyed reading a comic book, whether as an avid collector or as a young patient in a dentist's office-in fact, even for people who have never read a single comic book in their life. Scott Shaw!'s Oddball Comics! will be a thick, full-color book published in 2020 by TwoMorrows. See for yourself why Stan Lee called Scott's show "the wildest, wackiest exposé of some of the craziest comic books I've ever seen!"

Comic Pitch Review Friday
If you're a writer or artist attending the Comic Creator Connection, this is your chance to practice giving your pitch before the event and get some invaluable help from a professional writer and speaker coach. A pitch is simply a way to present yourself or your project to others. It is usually a brief speech designed to persuade your listener into supporting what you're doing or what you've made. Most creators have no trouble coming up with great ideas for new comics, but they often struggle to speak clearly and concisely about those ideas to other people. Giving a good pitch is a vital skill in bringing your project to life. Pitch reviews will be conducted by Douglas Neff, a professional speechwriter, speaker coach, and host of the Comic Creator Connection. This is not a panel. Instead, these are three- to five-minute individual coaching sessions for as many people as can be accommodated in the scheduled time. Spaces are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis, and observers are welcome.

Comic Book Law School: The ABC of Intellectual Property
It's among the buzziest of buzz words, a focal point for many international trade agreements, and a highly sought-after commodity in Hollywood-they're talking about IP (intellectual property), and the fact that IP is the focus of so much attention should make clear that understanding what it is exactly, and just how to get it, keep it, and monetize it is a vital part of any creator's tool chest. As technology continues to provide more and more channels for distributing content, it has never been easier to get creative works in front of audiences, or for those audience members to "borrow" (or outright steal) those very same works. But given a legal system that is struggling to keep up with the newest technological advances, and a legislature too preoccupied with other agenda items to keep the laws ahead of the curve, there are also more pitfalls than ever to navigate your way through on the road to success. So to avoid accidentally giving away your next big idea, or having it taken from you, consider that a little education will go a long way to helping you get and keep a firm grip on your IP. To that end, WonderCon welcomes back noted IP attorney Michael Lovitz, author of The Trademark and Copyright Book comic book, to discuss the do's and don'ts for protecting your intellectual capital. Attendees are invited to join an interactive discussion about basic rights provided under U.S. Copyright and Trademark laws, starting with the basics on the ownership and protection of ideas, a brief overview of copyright and trademark rights, including for works of authorship, characters, and names, as well as the registration process for each, and (time permitting) a brief discussion on why written agreements are good, and not all lawyers bring bad news. Along the way, there will be plenty to learn about the protections, and pitfalls, of the U.S. intellectual property systems. PleaseNote: The Comic Book Law School seminars are designed to provide relevant information and practice tips to practicing attorneys, as well as practical tips to creators and other professionals who may wish to attend. However, the seminar is presented for information and entertainment purposes only, and the information presented and opinions expressed at the seminars do not constitute legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. Here, Patrick A. Reed (Depth of Field) brings together an all-star group of graphic storytellers and musical luminaries to dig deep into the common history and shared inspirations of these two creative cultures.

Are you a writer with a great idea for a comic book series, but you can't draw? Or maybe you're an artist looking to illustrate an incredible story, but you can't write. WonderCon is proud to once again host the Comic Creator Connection, a fast-paced networking event that puts writers and artists together to help them meet new creative partners. Here's how it works: In a two-hour period, writers and artists will sit across from each other at a table. (And by artists, we mean pencillers, inkers, colorists, etc.-all are welcome!) Then, in five-minute sessions, you will talk one-on-one with each other about your ideas and skills. At the end of each five-minute period, you will get up and move on to the next person. If you're interested in furthering the conversation, you'll exchange contact information. Think of it as speed-dating, but for writers and artists! Sign-ups are taken in advance for this event, but space may still be available on site.

Living in a Post-Toys 'R' Us World: Navigating the Future of Toy Retail, Manufacturing and Collecting
The bankruptcy and liquidation of "the world's biggest toy store" Toys 'R' Us last year sent shockwaves through the toy industry. Where does this upheaval leave the average collector? Now Toys 'R' Us has re-formed under a new name and is exploring new possibilities. What will that mean for the industry? Moderator Daniel Pickett (ActionFigureInsider.com) will take the temperature of the toy and collectibles industry along with insider panelists Justin Donaldson (collector/co-creator of "The Tournament of Nerds"), Jesse Falcon (director of merchandising at Marvel Entertainment), Jason Labowitz (president and co-founder at Entertainment Earth, Inc.), Jeremy Padawer (co-president/partner, Wicked Cool Toys), and David Vonner (Boys Design Mattel). DC Super Hero Girls Video Presentation and Q&A
Fresh off their brand-new series on Cartoon Network, the DC Super Hero Girls are coming to WonderCon. The world may know them as Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Batgirl, but not-so-typical teenagers Diana, Kara, and Barbara, alongside their superhero friends, have much more to deal with than just protecting the citizens of Metropolis from some of the most sinister school-aged supervillains of the DC universe. After all, being teens is tough enough, what with school, friends, family, and the chaos that comes with managing a social life. But add superpowers and a secret identity to the mix, and things can get a lot more complicated. Executive producer Lauren Faust (My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends) and the vocal cast of Kimberly Brooks, Kari Wahlgren, Nicole Sullivan, Grey Griffin, and Myrna Velasco share new footage and answer your questions! Even if You're Paying for the Product, You're Still the Product with Cory Doctorow
The Internet is the planetary-scale nervous system for our species, and these days it consists of four giant sites filled with screenshots from the other three. The lesson of this moment in late-stage capitalism isn't that Facebook has figured out how to build a mind-control ray: Rather, it's that they've figured out how to scale up the paltry sums they extract from your personal life into piles so big, they add up to billions. WonderCon special guest Cory Doctorow shows us that fixing technology isn't a matter of paying for things instead of seeing ads: It's all about seizing the means of information and controlling your tech, rather than being controlled by it.
